While I'm working (about an hour later),always an activity takes place. My harddisk indicator blinks
(flashes). It is like a virus scanning or defrag action. I didn't understand the reason of this. I want to find what service causes this. It is very annoying because it slows down the computer...
probably you have updatedb running
open a terminal and run top
pressing and i will toggle the display between active processes. check who is consuming the most and post it when the activity occurs. usually the updatedb is supposed to happen at odd hours but if your machine was off at that time it will run when it finds out after booting up.
If you have anacron installed, your system could be running some cron jobs e.g. 2updatedb" as suggested in the earlier post. Because I usually leave my PC on during the night, this usually happens around 1 in the morning.
