Supermount or udev/D-BUS?

Every few months I get a hankering to give Linux another whirl on my insanely complex machine, and I usually just give up after a few months of desperate trying. I am on another such endeavor.

The 2.6 kernel freaks out if you have more than 6 IDE devices, and I have 8, so I am settling for FC1 for the time being. Maybe some day I will compile my own kernel that will support all 8 of them, but I am not that good yet.

One thing I have always disliked about Linux is the hassle of mounting and dismounting removable media. I have a DVD-ROM, a CD Burner, an LS120, and the usual floppy. They all get pretty regular use.

Supermount is NOT included in the FC1 kernel according to this:

Quote:
Supermount in the kernel?

Kristof Vansant proposed to get supermount included into the kernel, so people wouldn't have to go through the trouble of mounting any longer. Dave Jones instead points to the fact that it can be done almost entirely in userspace by using udev and D-BUS
which I found here.

Supermount code seems pretty unruly for someone as new at this as me, but then I have no idea how hard it would be to do it with udev and D-BUS.

Any hints?

TIA

J

i found submount to be easier to use. i mean, all i did was follow the instructions on the site, and it worked. with supermount, there was a lot more to do, and i can use time elsewhere hehe.
http://submount.sourceforge.net/

--edit: actually, the build instructions aren't on the site, but the INSTALL or README was enough i believe
