Exclamation Problems with rpm and LD_LIBRARY_PATH

Hi,

I've recently started playing around with Colinux (no permission to install new OS on work PC) and have a disk image of FC4 running (upgraded from a FC1 min. install via apt-get dist-upgrade). Everything works just fine apart from a couple of minor(?) glitches:

1. "rpm <options> URL:// " doesn't work. It aborts due to an "unknown error". E.g.:
Code:
[root@colinux ~]# rpm -Uvh
http://remi.collet.free.fr/rpms/fc4.i386/remi-release-1-1.fc4.remi.noarch.rpm
Retrieving
http://remi.collet.free.fr/rpms/fc4.i386/remi-release-1-1.fc4.remi.noarch.rpm
error: skipping
http://remi.collet.free.fr/rpms/fc4.i386/remi-release-1-1.fc4.remi.noarch.rpm
- transfer failed - Unknown or unexpected error

b7bAborted

Installed glibc: glibc-2.3.5-10.3

... the system has been recently "yum update"-ed.

2. It seems that LD_LIBRARY_PATH is not set at system startup:
Code:
[me@colinux ~]$ echo $LD_LIBRARY_PATH

[me@colinux ~]$
Any ideas anyone?

TIA
