minimized windows disapear in gnome

When I minimize a window in gnome it just disapears. It doesn't show up on the tool bar. What's up with this?

That happened to me once. Turned out that I had somehow removed the 'Window List' applet from the panel (toolbar).

Try right clicking on the panel, select 'Add to Panel', then 'Window List,' ... or 'Window Selector' if you prefer that style.
