Unhappy Loser Newbi question of the day

Just installed Fedore Core 1 today and was trying to let it update. OOPS

I love the graphic interface and was really pleased that fedora booted automatically into the gnome or kde.

So now it only boots to a prompt and I can not get the gui back.

I have tried 'startx' a few lines scrolled by but the prompt came up again.

I just want the windows-like enviroment back til I can get a book and learn more. Any help is greatly need

The update must have overwritten some config files for the gui. The easiest way around this would be to reinstall, or you could login as root and type xf86config (pressing enter afterwards). The first way will be easier, the second will teach you a little about the goings on behind the scenes of linux. All I offer is the truth, the choice is yours...

I would definitely not recommend reinstalling the OS to fix a simple X windows problem. That's the Microsoft Windows way, and it's just not necessary in any *nix. Why not give us some more info so we can help you? What kind of errors are you getting on the screen when X fails? (It should say something like "Fatal Error: No Screens Found" or some other such error, along with some more info. Give us as much detail as possible. Also, you might want to post the output of your /var/log/XF86Config file. Then tell us what kind of card you are running, etc., etc. It'll also help if you add your /etc/X11/XF86Config file.

Good luck.

Dave

It's fixed

I reinstalled fedora from scratch. I was wanting anyhow. It now works fine. I also found what the problem could have been. When ctrl-alt-<fcn key> is press, one gets a differnet login screen. Looks like that is what happen to me and I didn't know that the X screen was <F7>. damn noobie

Thanks for the replies
