location of apt-get logs

I am wondering where I can find logs for apt-get. I looked in syslog, but didnt find anything. Reason being is that I ran an apt-get dist-upgrade, and apt hung while committing changes. I killed apt-get, then tried to rerun it, but it still hangs. Any suggestions/fixes for this? Anybody know where to look for the logs? Thanks in advance

Look for a lock file in /var/cache/apt/archives and remove it.

I am not aware of a log file for it.

Depending upon what I had installed, sometimes I can upgrade by command line. Sometimes, you need to get a cup of coffee and a snack or nap a while...

If it hangs, I usually do this:

apt-get update
apt-get install synaptic

Then I use synaptic in X and upgrade a few packages at a time until I can fix the problem.
