Installing kernel problem

Hello, friends,
After some days on trials to install kernel on my machine I have decided to open this thread, even though I have found a lot of similar threads but nothing helped my problem.
My story is the following:
I am working with pixelfly cameras in Linux. Previously I had one mashine, I have installed Red Hat 9 on it. To work with cameras I had to install 2.4.x kernel on it. I have chosen 2.4.24 and everything was fine. Currently I have got a new machine, I have tried to do the same but had some problems to install network (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...09#post1528509)
After some advises I have decided to install Fedora Core 3 on the machine. Every thing went fine, but when trying to install the same 2.4.24 kernel I have got compilation error on "make bzImage". The same error was in all versions till 2.4.27. The versions 2.4.28 and 2.4.29 are passing the compilation but when I restart the computer I get the following lines:
hdc.c: Found HC with no IRQ. Check BIOS/PCI 00:03.3 setup!
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 00:00
I am using the same .config file as I used for the Red Hat station.
Am I doing anything wrong?
Thanks in Advance for any advises.
Leonid
P.S.
I am pretty in Linux. Please be as much specific as possible.
Thanks again

Can I be stupid and ask if there was a problem with a 2.6 kernel and your camera(s)?

equinox,
The drivers for the cameras could not be compiled with 2.6 kernel. After talking with the providers they said that they are working on that now, but currently I can compile them only in 2.4 kernel.

Well in that case, there must be a big change in the kernel from the default kernel on RH9 to kernel 2.4.24. Instead of just using your old .config rather compile a fresh 2.4.29 (I think that's the latest) and see how ti goes. Once you know your hardware kernel compiling isn't hard at all!

equinox,
Thanks for your time,
I am not talking about default kernel on RH9 but a .config file I have got from someone for compiling 2.4.24 on RH9. I can post it here if it is necessary. How can I compile a fresh 2.4.29 config. I have tried to "make config" instead of "make oldconfig" while installing 2.4.29, it asked a lot of questions, i have chosen all default answers but it did not work after restart. Is there another option?
Thanks a lot,
Leonid

well unpack the kernel source and do the necessary symlinking, then do a "make clean" followed by make menuconfig or make xconfig, which ever you preffer, then go on and compile it.

equinox,
After trying the make xconfig I got a feeling that it is a too hard task for my knowledge. It opened a GUI with a lot of options to change, but I had no idea if I should change anything. Anyway I just maid save and exited. After continuing the install process and restarting the system gave me new error messages:

....Ok booting the kernel.
Error: only one processor found
kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k scsi_hostadapter, errno = 2
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 00:00

Any ideas what I should change to solve it?
Thanks,
Leonid
