Unhappy install problem: fc4 can't see cd/dvd (fujitsu p7120)

title says it. fc4 wants me to select a device driver for the cdrom. i tried all the sata drivers provided by fc4 with no luck. (the bios says the cdrom is on a serial ata channel. btw, this laptop uses the intel 915GMS chipset.)

i tried knoppix and it croaked early in the bootup, giving a message that suggested it had problems finding the cd/dvd also ("...can't find knoppix filesystem..." ).

ubuntu (a live cd) worked great.

so it's not a hardware problem due to this being a just-released laptop.

i've been using RH since v4.1 so i'm not ready to switch distros. any ideas what i might do/try to get fc4 installed.

(btw, i succeeded installing fc4, but had to put the dvd iso on a fat32 partition and pointed fc4 to the hard drive for the media. the fully installed fc4 works fine except it can't see the cd/dvd either; i'd hoped it would sort itself after installation.)

any help/pointers appreciated.

I dealt with a really weird problem like this referencing a hard drive. Had to place a command in the kernel boot script for the hard drive to work.

Well, you need to do some search on the net.

Also try justlinux.com

There a lot of people that could possibly help you over there. They helped me with my hard drive problem.

follow up: pclinuxos (live) also works. the two distros that work (pclinuxos, ubuntu) use 2.6.12+. the ones that don't (fc4, knoppix) are using 2.6.11, i believe. i've tried fc5-test, which i think uses 2.6.15 but that didn't work either. maybe kernel parameters are the answer, but i don't konw what they might be.
