I installed the hpoj driver in an attempt to get scanning working on my OfficeJet K60 (CUPS does printing just fine). It was only after I had installed hpoj that I found out that the sane backend package is supposed to be installed first. I then installed the SANE backend (1.0.14) and went back to the hpoj and did 'make clean' and then './configure && make && make install' thinking that this would be the same as if I had installed the SANE backend first, however scanning is still not working 'scanimage --list-devices' says the following:

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).

Does anyone know what I did wrong? Or have any advice on getting a mulitpurpose piece of crap like an OfficeJet K60 working? I'd really like to hear them.

Check /etc/sane.d/dll.conf and make sure the hpoj entry is uncommented (usually at the very bottom of the list). You can also run /usr/local/sbin/ptal-init setup to see if hpoj can see you scanner.
