I just used the ISO CDs to upgrade from FC3 to FC4 and have run into a yum problem. I get an error that directories are missing and failures of scripts. Here is the output from my yum -y check-update
Code:
[root@note ~]# yum -y check-update
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - No such file or directory (2)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

These seem to be written in python, which is another language I have yet to learn.
I've searched for yum errors but haven't turned up anything remotely resembling this problem.
I chose to try the upgrade from FC3 to FC4 by CDs because I had the CDs.
I am running several machines with Fedora Core. One is a virtual machine hosted elsewhere running a site I manage. It is running FC4. A home machine with lots of stuff running FC3. It is this machine I really want to upgrade to match the hosted site. Then a throw-away machine that I was testing the upgrade from FC3 to FC4.
The link you provided is for Core 5. Can I do the same substituting 4 for 5? This looks almost too easy. The release in the 4 subdirectory is called "fedora-release-4-2.noarch.rpm".
Yes, you can do it with fedora-release-4-2.noarch.rpm. However, i recommend backing up your files because yum and rpm are not perfect. It will work, but it is better to be prepared for any problem.

cux,
Thanks again. This worked great on my test/throw-away/notebook machine. When I get some time, I'll work on my home machine. For unrelated reasons, it took about four attempts to get FC3 back on the test machine, more than an hour on cable to update FC3, then three or more hours to upgrade and then update FC4.
rpm the release you want
yum upgrade
yum update
Very smooth. I haven't checked all the changes, but it is a terrific way to upgrade. I will be sure to backup anything important on my home machine before doing this upgrade.
