FC2 and VMWare

I have Fedora Core 1 installed and working fine on VMWare Workstation 4.5.1. When FC2 was released, I downloaded the ISOs and burnt them, then installed it as a new virtual machine on VMWare. However, when I boot the machine, it takes a while to load everything.

The login prompt appears:

Quote:
Fedora core release 2
dhcppc2 login:
This flashes several times and then an error is displayed:

Quote:
I cannot start the X server. Itis likely it is not setup correctly. Would you like to view the X server output?

Yes | No
My keyboard doesn't respond and although I can use my mouse, clicking doesn't do anything.

I have managed to get it to go back to the login prompt several times and also to display the error message to me. It says:

Quote:
No screens found
What should I do about getting this to work?

First off. Actually read the manual.

Second. Click in the Vmware window first, then type, as you have to set focus first.

Third. Try the display drivers they tell you about 40 times to install. Aka. VMWARE TOOLS.

1. I have looked for a solution to this problem - posting here was my last resort
2. I'm not an idiot. I have done that
3. You actually have to have the OS running before you can do that.

Can I have some proper help?

FC2 on VMWare is a real pain. I've fought it for a couple of days now and I think that I might have some solutions.

First off, update VMWare to 4.5.2 for some improved kernel 2.6 support.

Now, the problem seems to be changes made in FC2 with X. Now, here's what I've found and have yet to try.

Color Depth Problem

X Startup and Mouse Problems

Same guy, more stuff

Don't remember where I found this:
Quote:
The X server is looking for /dev/mouse, which doesn't exist by default in Fedora Core 2. The remedy is to link /dev/mouse to /dev/input/mice, i.e.
I haven't tried any this stuff yet, so I'm not sure what the cause is right now. I consider myself a linux n00b, but I'm getting better. Let me know if it works for you, and how you did it!

edit: Oop! Didn't realize this post was so old... If someone does know a solution, I'd be interested in finding out before I go fight it myself. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. I did manage to fix it after eventually managing to install the VMWare Tools. That fixed the monitor problem and the mouse problem was fixed by altering the location of the mouse as you suggested.

Thanks for the links though
