Hope your keyboard is working properly, (type user password in a text editor to check)
create a new user, assign same password as root & try and login, if you succeed then change password and check again

Well My keyboard is working fine.....
(lets suppose my keyboard is not working properly)
/* if i change the password of use USER suppose linux....
my system keyboard taking x as X(suppose).....then it sets the passwd as linuX and again in login when i try to type linux it ll take linu x as linuX....which is same as previous one then it will successful login */.... so its not the matter whether the keyboard is working properly or not .....i think its a error in passwd or shadow file....
