dsl connection problem on FC2

This one has me perplexed.

I am trying to set up my dsl connection. It works on WindowsXP on my dual boot and also on Knoppix on this same computer, but I can't get it to work with FC2.

On FC2 I am able to set up a connection, but I am unable to access web pages. It can't be DNS related because the resolv.conf files are the same in Knoppix (where the dsl works) and FC2 (where it doesn't work). In mozilla and konqueror I typed in "www.google.com" and I got the error message, "The connection was refused when attempting to contact www.google.com" Then in a terminal (in FC2) I typed:

gethostip google.com

the response:
google.com 216.239.39.99 D8EF2763

Then I took the 216.239.39.99 above and typed it into mozilla and the webpage came up no problem. Again, remember that the /etc/resolv.conf file is apparently set properly. I double checked it. Strange.

Does anyone have any suggestions. It would be greatly appreciated.

Thomas

What are the permissions on /etc/resolv.conf? Can ordinary users read it?

I just changed permissions on etc/resolv.conf from rw-r--r-- to rwxrwxrwx. I can't tell if this caused any change or not, but I've discovered some new symptoms. When I log on as root I am to access some websites but not others. For instance when I try www.google.com or mozilla.org I get the same error message as before, but when I try debian.org or linuxquestions.org my web browser finds those pages. When I'm logged on as a user I'm not able to access any pages at all.
