i have a matrox G450 and a samsung 172t LCD, and i'm using the samsung h/vsync values, but X won't work above 800x600 at 16 color depth. i also changed the syncs to what is working in arch, but it won't work in fedora for some reason. what should i try next?

it's frustrating because acceleration doesn't work in arch, but it works perfectly in fedora. so i'd like to switch to fedora for a while, until i get a new video card that works in arch. can anyone help?
Before you get into anything complicated try this. Go into your display settings and look at what has been chosen for your monitor. If it has chosen one with 800x600 resolution you wont get it higher. Just select generic LCD (if it is one) of resolution whatever you want and then you can go back and change your resolution. After logout and then back in so X restarts and you should be good to go.
i changed the setting to Generic LCD 1280x1024, but it still only displays at 800x600 16 depth. in the System -> preferences, the screen resolution dialog only lists 800x600 and 640x480, even though i changed the refresh rate to 60. what's wrong? is it buggy? it seems weird that i can't get 1280x1024 on a generic LCD.
after googling a little more, i solved the screen resolution by adding the vga parameter to grub (vga=775 for 1280x1024). i guess it needs to be in the same mode all the way from boot. the monitor goes into "video mode not supported" while it's doing the progress screen, but once gdm starts it works. hooray!
the problem is, i lost the acceleration. only i don't really understand the relationship between framebuffer, vid drivers, mesa GL, etc. well enough to know how to fix it.
