i had a similar problem... i think the thing is that fedora prioritizes its native graphics driver over the ati radeon driver. i upgraded to kernel 2.6.1 and it fixed it.
Also did you rerun fglrxconfig after installing the new kernel?
UPDATE: Just installed the source and rpm for 2.6.1, and mostly everything works fine. The 3D STILL doesn't work though. Any help would be great.
UPDATE 2: Well, after trying to build the modules, my Fedora system is kinda messed up [GL is missing among other things]... I will reinstall IF someone has an easier way [this is the only distro thats given me trouble on this, the others have clear cut instructions, such as SuSE 9 or MDK, or X2 even.]
OK, after following some instructions on making the modules, I now don't get any messages running glxgears. However, my glxinfo says that I STILL don't have direct rendering.

I'd really appreciate it if I wasn't the only one replying to this thread... Perhaps someone out there has encountered the same problem, and has fixed it?
i installed the drivers from the ati website (i have a 9700 pro), and everything is working just fine on the 2.4 kernel, i get ~3500 fps on glxgears and all the 3d screen savers and whatnot work without problems

how the hell is this possible??? can you tell me what motherboard you have, whether you had any problems at all getting the drivers to work & how you resolved them, and whether or not you're using agpgart?
also HyakuMan, where did you go to get kernel 2.6.1?
okay, i've noticed that 2.6.1 still doesn't fix my 3d problem, i get full 2d acceleration, but no 3d... i'm still trying to figure out how to remove that mesagl crap that comes with linux. mesa gl is what is screwing our cards up and not letting us have full 3d support, so if anyone can figure out how to get rid of it, do tell!
@ spiderworm: i got the 2.6.1 kernel from http://www.kernel.org/. 2.6.2 stable is out now, so i'm gonna look at that.
