ATi Radeon 9800 and Fedora...

I have read some other posts by people using Radeon 9800 and having problems with it in Fedora. I have read about using the "linux rescue" option and the option of trying to get into text mode. I've tried both ways, and don't understand what to do... I'm very new to Linux. I've read to go into "/etc/X11/XF86Config" file and find the card you're using (Radeon 9800, but I believe the person who posted this information was using the pro model) and find your Driver for the video card to a generic "vesa" driver. How do you do this? I've tried just getting in under text mode, root user, but dont' know anything about the commands. I need some help about what to do because I'm scared of just playing around and screwing something up. Also, can you get in under text mode and install the Ati linux drivers by cd? If so, how would you do this?

i assume that you know how to get to text mode and login.
when you done above thing, it should gave you a $ or # sign which means that you was a logged on user right now.
you have to log in as root to be able to install the ati driver from www.ati.com and the latest version i believe was 3.7.0.
you could download to a partition where you could see it in linux. then just cd to that directory and do "rpm -Uvh <package's name>" or "urpmi -Uvh <package's name>" can't remember which one. i don't use mandrakes. Sorry
Hope it'll help
