I've only used apache 1.33 but might be the same as apache2, did you configure apache with this line:

./configure --activate-module=src/modules/php4/libphp4.a
make
make install

replace
--with-mysql=usr/local/mysql
--with-mysql=/usr/local/mysql
the second may work better but i dont know whether this is the solution...
but at least it would explain why the libmysqlclient is not found...
good luck
j.

if u use a distro that supports rpm (fedora,redhat,suse..) or debian u can install all that easily

OOOPs sorry left something out of that reply. The source directory is in the extracted apache source file. Since your compiling from a source file most likely a .gz or .bz2, once you extract the source file, change into the apache folder then type:

./configure --activate-module=src/modules/php4/libphp4.a
make
make install

Although I haven't done this for Apache2 so I not sure if it will have the src directory
