Smile X Window config file

Does anybody know where the X Window configuration file is placed on the Debian 3.1 r1 distribution. And my second question is: After I mess up my system because of a bad video card driver installation... How can I restore the original X window configuration... Is it just a copy (the backed up copy of the X Window configuration file) paste (over the messed new X window configuration file)?
I'd feel pleased if I only knew the first question. But for your always usefull help, THANK YOU.

Talking I made a piece of crap my X on suse

does any one know how could I fix this. I get a message saying:
"Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. IF you have not logged out yourself, this could mean that there is some installation problem o r that you may be out of diskspace.Try loggin in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix this problem."
The point is that i have enough disk space. But I made some changes I don't know where that messed everything up. I tried to change the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf so that it was the previous one. But the error did not chage. I tried to see the error log, but it was empty.

Any great ideas?
