why does synaptic "fail" when updating repositories?

In synaptic I click "Update" and the box pops up and many hit and go to 100%, but others fail and my eye cannot catch them fast enough (the scroll forces the screen to the bottom). I believe that my:

ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ sid main (this is for mplayer)
ftp.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free

seem to be my issues. Can I not hit the debian.org stable and unstable at the same time? Should I change these to http:// instead of ftp:// perhaps? Or is it just a load thing, too many people not enough bandwidth on the other end?

If you want to see the exact error messages, you can open a terminal window and then hit the maximize button to make it as big as your screen allows. Then you can type these two commands:

$ su
# apt-get update

Notice that you don't need to actually type the "$" and "#" characters -- these just represent the command prompt in the above commands.

It happens to me occassionally, but running "apt-get update" again usually solves the problem.
