Arrow What was the distro you used before Debian?

The thing is that I never heard of debian before I used it.
I used before it RH and at the 9th version they blew it up.

I am courios : How many of us came from another distro and remained here.

Of course that assumes someone didn't start out from Debian and moved to something...OR that someone doesn't use multiple distros

I use Mandrake on my laptop exclusively right now, but on my Athlon I have Mandrake and Debian setup and I like em both real good hehe...

Not to mention Knoppix (I always try to have the latest CD somewhere around...) if that counts.

I did a lot of research and reading before I chose Debian, which was my first Linux distro. I chose it because it was advanced, mainstream, and I like the idea behind it. I figured it would be hard enough to use that I would learn a lot about Linux, but easy to get support with (like groups such as this one!).

The answer to this is the last option. (in fact that is a 2 in 1 option)

i would really like to add a choice to this poll: "tried various/multiple distros before staying with Debian"

i tried about 15-20 different distros before i stopped with debian. the longest i stayed with a distro was 4-5 months when i was starting out with Mandrake then i went distro hopping.

Maybe is too early to say it, but what does slack lack ( ) and can be found in Debian?
Apt, lots of apps, more configurable(I think, although I haven't used it, that slack is more configurable as is more bare boned...) or is it the logo

Swaret apparently gives Slack apt-like package management. I'd love to remove Debian from my router in favour of it but I really don't want to have to hook CD-ROM and floppy drives up to it again to reinstall Slack...

I have only recently started experimenting with Linux. My first install was Mandrake, but, I have to say that I fell in love with Debian via Knoppix. Whoever thought that one up has done a great service for Linux in gerneral as well as Debian in particular. It is a great way to get your feet wet, IMO. Since, I have found allot of other Live CD's that I never knew existed until I stumbled upon Knoppix.

I have also been using RedHat before and I have to admit that 7.3 was the LAST version I ever considerd using. After a time of using Debian I switched completely to Debian. I also migrated ALL RedHat servers at my company to Debian servers - which are now pretty much more performant and secure ...

Debian kicks ass :-)

I was using Slackware 8.0 but since installed Slack 9.0 and still use it along with Debian Sid.

I like them both and will probably keep both on my rig!

Question What's that?

I understand the RH to debian option: is so bloated, package manager in version 9 is plain stupid, it tends to look (and act) more and more like Micro$haft WindozeXP) but what is with Slack???

Is it too bare-boned?

or the tar.gz packs are not so fine as the deb ones ?

Based on my experience so far, Debian is more "try hard rice rocket" than Cadillac: It looks like a Cadillac on the outside but once you get inside, you realise it's just a grocery getter.

I started with Corel Linux (1997 or 98)
3 months later I tried Debian 'till now.

I never tried RH or Mdrke because Debian does the job.
