how to determine if the distro is debian?


say i'm writing a script that wants to do something in particular if the user is using debian (like apt-get install <something>), where can a i query for the distribution name/version/etc?

thanks.

/etc/debian_version


edit: I mean check for this file, and it contains the version as well.
