What is the difference between APT and Portage (Gentoo)?

Anyone knows what are the differences between the two package management systems ?

Thanks.

Not much from the info on this page except from the start using apt you are downloading binary pre-compiled packages to install for portage you download source and compile the binaries, but they both allow you to get binary or compile from source.

Besides the command line interface, apt-get has 'aptitude', an ncurses graphical interface that can be used in text mode or GUI. As far as I know, portage is command line only. The emerge command (portage) has lots of switches/variations, so it takes a little learning. Both have search features for finding what package does what. I haven't made up my mind which I like more, but I haven't really studied aptitude much, yet.
