The assumption, I believe, is that if people are using Debian over any one of the clones it's because of the philosophy.
I've used Ubuntu, and then switched to Debian, and stuck. Frankly, if I'd look at it another way, personally I see no reason to use Ubuntu instead of Debian. I switched U->D because I couldn't get Apache HTTPD/OpenSSH-Server packages to work. I simply couldn't. I understand that it's The distribution attracting new people at the moment, but I've found it also somewhat means most of it's comunity is new to linux, thus looking for help instead of being able to provide it.

I am personally using Debian because some of their clones are too bloated (for a lack of a better word). I have only tried 1 of them out, but that was enough for me to use the real thing full time. And no I am not trying to draw critisism, that is just my

I think I will just install Firefox from the Mozilla site. Not that I don't want to support IceWeasel as a more "free" project, but for now I want to stick with Firefox (one of my friends doesn't like the name IceWeasel either, says it sounds evil and underhanded, so he's sticking with Konqueror. ).

The problem is, I don't know how to install Firefox 'properly' on my system. I could just run it straight from the desktop, but that's not exactly to my liking. :P Should I just dump the whole folder right into /usr/share? Do I need to put all that firefox stuff in /usr/lib?

I kinda hope they just put Firefox in non-free . . .

If you want it available to all users install it to /usr/local/

It is a spot made for such use and apt does not touch it so you don't have to worry about an upgrade messing things up.

And putting firefox in non-free would have the same problems as main once the freeze hits. They would have to run every patch - including security - through mozilla corp before securing the browser and hope that mozilla does not tell Debian no to a patch.

Does anyone know when the iceweasel packages will start hitting the repositories? I just went looking for it, and it isn't even in experimental yet.

Is Firefox simply going to be switched over to Iceweasel when Etch is released? I'm not a developer or a member of the project, just a user, but that kind of seems like it wouldn't follow the development guidelines if that were the case.

Probably, since thats what they did with Thunderbird/Icedove in Etch a couple of days ago. I did a dist-upgrade and it simply deleted Thunderbird and installed Icedove and left a thunderbird->icedove symlink.
It kept and is still using my ~/.mozilla-thunderbird folder though.
