USB permission and virtual login?

When logged in as a normal user I can access my USB memory stick without problem when I connect it, but when I connect my digital camera instead I get the following message

An error occurred in the io-library ('Bad parameters'): Could not find USB device (vendor 0x4a9, product 0x3047). Make sure this device is connected to the computer.

If I log in as root I can access the camera without problem. Are there extra permissions I need to give to the normal user?

Also how do you log in a new user in a window when you are already logged into a gnome session?

Thanks

Thanks for the link.

In a previous distribution I tried (sadly can't remember which one I've tried so many), in the system menu there was an option to login a new user in a normal graphical gnome session, but within a window you could minimise or move abut like any other application.

EDIT:

Turns out you need xnest installed, then there's an option called "New Login in a Nested Window" in the system menu which executes "gdmflexiserver --xnest"
