updating packages

i'm new to debian. my question may seem so be rather stupid. namely, how do i update packages (i mean is there any internet service like rhn in redhat)? woody, seems to have many outdated packages, which i'd like to update (for purpose gnome, which has version 1.4, that is "new" to me).
