Unable to remove adobe-flashplugin

As part of trying to solve the problem that skin tones appear blue in Youtube (but not in other sites) I am trying to remove adobe-flashplugin 10.0.22.87-1.

I have used :
Code:
sudo apt-get remove adobe-flashplugin
but get this:
Quote:
Removing adobe-flashplugin ...
update-alternatives: error: no alternatives for iceape-flashplugin
update-alternatives: error: no alternatives for iceape-flashplugin
dpkg: error processing adobe-flashplugin (--remove):
subprocess installed pre-removal script returned error exit status 2
postinst called with argument `abort-remove'
dpkg: error while cleaning up:
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
adobe-flashplugin
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
I do not have iceape installed.

I have installed the latest (and apparently last) update directly from adobe but this did not affect the above.

Suggestions will be gratefully recieved.

I don't known how to remove, but I had also problem with blue skins. But it arise with one of the last version. Now I have 11.2.202.238 which is newest and probably the last for Linux And of course have no problem with Youtube. I am also using open source nvidia drivers and not tested with proprietary (which I used ealier, during "blue skin") Definitely it will help if you disable hardware acceleration in Flash options. Also if you have latest Firefox (and probably other browsers too), then on Youtube is used HTML5, without needs of Flash plugin.

Short Tip: Remove packages on Debian systems with ultimate force « /home/liquidat - https://liquidat.wordpress.com/2008/...ltimate-force/

Code:
dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq adobe-flashplugin
Then install the flashplugin-nonfree from the Debian repos.

The blue color issues has to do with the nvidia driver, search the forums for a fix.

The reason you are having issues removing it is because it is an Ubuntu package NOT a Debian package.

Stick with the Debian repos and you won't have these problems.

why would he need the Chrome Beta?

Chrome stable has the same flash version,

Flash - Version: 11.3.31.232
Shockwave Flash 11.3 r31
Name: Shockwave Flash
Description: Shockwave Flash 11.3 r31
Version: 11.3.31.232

Type: PPAPI (out-of-process)

@ craigevil

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately it did not work. I ran dpkg -L, deleted the files and directories it listed but still got the same error.

It seems that update-alternatives is causing the problem but frankly I cannot get my brain around its documentation (in dww).

You stated that the package is an ubuntu one. How did you reach that conclusion? I only use debian repos - unless I installed from a downloaded file but then it would have been the tar.gz from adobe. I cannot find any other downloaded installers.

Any more help will be appreciated, especially regarding update-alternatives.

eSelix, thanks, that did the trick. Dpkg still complained about iceape but adobe-flashplugin was removed. When I ran the command again I got a message about ignoring the command because the plugin was not installed.

Strange thing: adobe-flashplugin no longer appears in the "all" section of Synaptic but there is still flashplugin-nonfree.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

Nothing strange about it, you downloaded adobe-flashplugin from Adobe. Which even though it was a .deb package was made for Ubuntu, hence the problems trying to remove it.

The correct way to get flash is to use flashplugin-nonfree from the Debian repos or flashplayer-mozilla from the deb-multimedia.org repo. Or just use Google Chrome since it has Flash built in plus it has a newer version.

Chrome?

I take it that Chrome is being proposed as a replacement for my current browser which is Firefox.

Given Google's appetite for collecting data I would be very reluctant to help them by adopting Chrome!
