Question the utility ar is not in your PATH

I get this message whenever I try to install any package:

"the utility ar is not in your PATH"

tried to 'apt-get install package' as well, but it did not find any packages.

(I previously was able to use this utility but now it's not working)

any ideas? kinda new at this and not sure how to proceed. checked the FAQ's and tutorials but found nothing that helped.

I'm running Debian 3.1, and am rather new at it. can anyone help?

cheers!

dpkg --list '*binutil*'|awk '/^ii/{print $2}'

Very valuable command, that, for someone who uses
debian or ubunut.

Alternatively use synaptic, dselect, aptitude and
search...

Cheers,
Tink
