Strange Background Colors after Logout / Standby

Hi,

everytime I close my laptop and open it again I have a "crashed" backgroud with strange colors (screenshot)

Do somebody have an idea what could be the problem ?

I have the problem all the time. I updated all packages and drivers (I use a nvidia graphic card (NVS-4200M)

Kernel and nvidia driver are up to date.

that looks rather nice actually, but of course it's a problem.
that NVS-4200M is something that was used around 2010, and is most likely based on the same core as the GeForce GT 520M.
you should find out which nvidia driver is the correct one - not necessarily the newest.
I always use the instructions from here.

I installed the "newest" one that matched to my gpu chipset ... not "any" new driver ;=)

ok.
however you posted no additional information; what are we to do now?

are you sure the nvidia driver is actually active?

Code:
lspci -k | grep -iEA5 'vga|display|3d'
when you see that garbled image, does that mean the system becomes unusable until reboot, or can you switch ttys, or something else? describe the process.

then you have to sift through logs i guess.
I'd start with /var/log/Xorg.0.log (that is the log of the current Xorg session!)
and

Code:
dmesg
(the last lines are the newest entries)

You might have nVidia hybrid (Optimus) graphics. In that case, when you suspend by closing the lid, when the machine wakes up it is using a different gpu with the wrong driver. In this case you can edit swsusp.conf to switch to the nVidia gpu on wake-up. Otherwise, use hibernate.
