Question 16 colors background console mode

I need to have the 16 colors background in a console/terminal. I know xterm based XWindow terminal emu have this capability.

When I am in console mode ( console in VGA text mode ), I need it there also.

I knew howto some years ago in the time of MS-DOS/borland's conio.h-- and also -- but I can't recall the BIOS soft. interrupt to call with a given value that turns off blinking mode and allow 16 bg colors.

I expect linux terminals to have this option also....

Hints, leading to infos will be very apreciated :-)

thanks,
Bretzel

try ls --color=auto on a directory, you'll probably find that colors are available.

To change other color options background/foreground etc. see promt magic at the bottom.

Thanks, but no help ....

Hi,
thanks for your very fast and short answer.

But I don't think it will help me to get 16 colors background...
BTW, you lead me to a nice tutorial on Bash prompt :-) I've forgot about the "\[" + "\]" <non-prining characters> sequence.

thus, It MUST be a way to have that 16 colors in linux, I can't believe that we are unable to obtain this mode. ...

... And I am talking at the programing forum, to expect an answer on howto change the terminal attributes for obtaining that 16 colors in the background

#include <conio.h>
...
setblink(0);
...

You could try setting the kernel option vga=ask, but I think this alters resolution, not colors.
