Hi
I've been searching the ends of this forum for the answer to this problem, and well I finally discovered the answer to it myself, so I decided to register and share it with you
Anyway, the problem is that AMSN would randomly crash for no reason. I still used AMSN regardless.. It's a hell of a lot better than gaim, that's for sure. Even more annoyingly, though, is that you need to kill AMSN, but then also recover ~/.amsn from a backup, it refuses to work again otherwise!
Now, according to the AMSN FAQ, this is caused by the sound configuration. Well so I disabled every option in AMSN that related to sound; but nope, the problem still existed.
I checked out their known problems page: and sure enough the problem was listed there - the problem occurs only on Debian, using 2.6 Kernel with preemption, with TCL 8.4; it seems it works fine with TCL 8.3, or if you're using a 2.4 Kernel.
So anyway, if you're using a 2.6 Kernel and want to use AMSN, and get random crashing, edit this line in /usr/bin/amsn
From
Code:
cd /usr/share/amsn && /usr/bin/wish amsn
To
Code:
cd /usr/share/amsn && /usr/bin/wish8.3 amsn
It will now use TCL 8.3, and the problem should hopefully go away
Enjoy!
