Ok, I have sound working, I know that because everytime I get to the end of a typed line is the /bin/bash shell, it makes a noise, but when I open KDE, as it's loading it get the error message
Try disabling arts in the kde control center and see if you get the same error message. I've always found arts(the kde sound server) to be kind of buggy and have frequently had to disable it to get sound working. You won't get the kde system sounds but everything else seems to work(games, xmms, etc).
