sound trouble after upgrade from sarge to sid

I just dist-upgraded from sarge to sid. Everything seems to be working perfectly except for the sound, which plays the startup noise on KDE start and stops working immediately after that. The test sound button produces no response. Help?

check the volume setting... seriously. When you upgrade sound stuff it sometimes tends to set the sound levels to 0 (this happened to me before)

which that would make sense, it would set the level sometime during kde startup... coincidentally during the startup sound.

Just something to check...
