Is it basically saying that I need to recompile my kernel after I figure out what drivers to use?

I will read over it again but I have a feeling that this is going to be a long day..

Without looking at the howtos, I'm sure they don't say that. If you're running Etch, it's easy. If you're running Lenny (which you should be), you have to pull the Nvidia drivers from Sid.

I believe I am using Etch... Its Debian 4 version 2.14.3

is there a way to display if its Etch or what? If I am running Etch, how do I set up my card? -- You said it was easy.

It's easy, but you have to have at least a vague clue of what you are doing. Version 4 would be Etch OK, but what is 2.14.3? Is that a kernel version? If so, it's totally out of whack. What is the output of $ uname -r and $ cat /etc/apt/sources.list

...and, exactly which Nvidia card do you have?

uname -r yields 2.6.18-6-k7

sources.list shows stuff about Etch.

My video card is an AGP GeForce 8800GT-OC

Should I try to follow those instructions given to me in the first reply? I'm just afraid I will mess up my installation.

Does your sources.list file include contrib and non-free, like this ...

deb ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ etch main contrib non-free

It makes sense for you to just post the whole thing.

Tech Patterns :: smxi dist-upgrade/ maintenance script, kernel install
Quote:
smxi is a general utility script that handles the standard system upkeep for Debian Sid (and Sid based, distros like sidux), Debian Testing, and Debian Stable - kernel installs, dist-upgrade/upgrade, package installs, cleanup, and graphics install. Has full logging, and will create logs on error of key parts. For non sidux systems, like Debian, you can select whether to use aptitude or apt-get, as well as dist-upgrade or upgrade, as smxi defaults when you first start the script.
