Set DVD writer permissions

Hello,

After two months of trouble free Debian computing, I'm back with another problem! But this one is driving me mad! I've recently bought an external DVD writer and I can't get the thing to write. After a lot of Googling around and some help from the hardware section of this forum, I've finally found a light at the end of the tunnel. I don't know why I didn't see this before, but I've found that in K3b there is a configuration tab and in it I see that the writer is set as read only. How can I change this? Do I need to do a chmod somewhere? If so, where? I can't see the DVD drive in /media and I don't see how I can set permissions in /etc/fstab.

Thanks very much

James

What's the device file for the drive? It should be somewhere in /dev. Try changing the permissions on the device file itself. For dvd writing, nothing is mounted on the device so there's no point worrying about the mount point. I'd focus on the device file itself.
By the way, can you read cd/dvds in the external drive and if so, where does it mount?

Thanks for your reply,

I can use the dvd to read cds and dvds. I can also use it to write cds. Clicking on "properties" reveals that the dvd is mounted in /media and that the device node is /dev/scd0, which I have chmoded to 0777 but to no avail. Looking in /media I have three folders labeled cdrom. but I don't know what they correspond to. Here is the list with the corresponding permissions:

cdrom (shortcut), points to cdrom0, so no permissions
cdrom0 owner (view & modify) group (view) others (view)
cdrom1 owner (view & modify), group (view), others (view)

All these folders are empty, so I don't know what they're for.

I was wondering if this could be a problem with group definitions. I had a problem with the scanner for a while and couldn't write to it unless I was root. Defining the normal user as part of the scanner group resolved this problem. This time, however, I can't even write as root so I don't imagine it's that.

It all really looks like I need to add a line to a config file somewhere to define the dvd writer, but which?? and what would I have to write?? This business is seriously getting on my nerves!!!

Once again, thanks for your help
