I just reinstalled my debian system, and it seems that there are now security updates for Sarge. Does that mean it's getting close to stable? if so, will etch also release with Sarge or not?
No there are no security updates for Sarge, there is a team which releases security updates for Woody but none for Sarge, which is perfectly understandable because of the manpower that would require given the number of packages included in debian.
The last announcement was on April 1 that said a freeze of Sarge was coming soon. I periodically check lists and http://bugs.debian.org/release-critical/ to see how things are going. As of today, there are still 94 bugs in the way of releasing.
I don't know the details about how it all works but there has been since december 2004 a special team (currently 17 developers) actively working to fix security problems in Debian testing. And it's not just for making the Sarge release easier but they plan to keep on working on Debian's testing branch when it changes to Etch. http://secure-testing.alioth.debian.org/
