Security Updates

I have recently installed Mandriva 10.1 and haven't really got my head round updates / packages etc yet. One of the things I have still to do is install all the security updates. When I start the update software I get a list of packages that comes to a total of over 400Mb which would take hours and hours to download on my 56K modem - do I need to install all these patches or is it a case of having to go through them 1 by 1 and deciding if I need them or not?

Unfortunately this is the way with modern operating systems - lots and lots of bug fixes and updates. You could go through them one-by-one and decide what you think is important but it might be a good idea to try and order an updates CD from somewhere on the net. Eg if you live in Australia elx.com.au has 'errata' CDs for Mandrake: http://www.elx.com.au/item/mdk101errata

Otherwise just set the thing to download overnight.

regular application updates are something you can either download/patch if you feel like it, but security and bug fixes are something you really need to download. setup urpmi and set it to run overnight while you sleep. You don't want to put yourself in the situation where you can be hacked because your system contained serious security vulnerabilities.
