and just out of curiosity..
are you really running a 386 ? or is your system a Celeron, PII, PIII, or P4 class machine?
if so you might want to update your kernel to something a bit more optimized.. the 386 kernel for instance won't take advantage of the MMX extension from the Pentium MMX or PII series, it will not take advantage of the SSE, SSE2, or SSE3 extensions of the newer processors, etc..
You can check what CPU you have with
cat /proc/cpuinfo

to upgrade kernel to one with better CPU support...
apt-get update
apt-get install kernel-image-2.4-686
reboot
you mayt even want to upgrade your kernel then try alsaconf again..
