pidgin 2.7.9 install requirement on Debian 5.03

hi

i'm trying to install 2.7.9 on debian 5.03, when i'm checking with ./configure show me a requirement:

Code:
checking for GLIB... no
no
configure: error:

You must have GLib 2.12.0 or newer development headers installed to build.

If you have these installed already you may need to install pkg-config so
I can find them.
last time when I've installed this package on Ubuntu didn't worked anymore and I had to reinstall it.
So, my question is: Should I install this library? or what should I do?

All I need is Pidgin for Yahoo! Msg for chat and file transfer. With this version of Pidgin I can't connect to Yahoo servers, changes pager servers and same.

Thanks in advance.

There is pidgin 2.7.3 in the backports repository, may be that that will also fit your needs, and you can install it with apt, so that the package-manager actually knows about it.

I have installed version 2.4.3.When I'm trying to install it :
Code:
debian:/home/david# apt-get install pidgin
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
pidgin is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
I'm using ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian as software source.(maybe this is the problem)

To be clear: You don't replace your main debian-repo by it, but add it.
Install with:
apt-get install -t lenny-backports pidgin
