nvidia driver problem 1 million

yep its another nvidia question sorry for being boring..
i have just installed debian based DeMuDi (www.angnula.org) and it starts up with a blank screen. i assume this is because i have a nvidia ti4200. so i followed the proceedure at http://lists.agnula.org/pipermail/us...er/003171.html
all is good untill i get to the last bit...

For example I would:

dpkg -i /usr/src/nvidia-kernel-2.4.25-1-multimedia-686_1.0.5336-6+2.4.25-3.4_i386.deb
which incidentally i would as well but this is what happens...

(reading database...85721 files and directories currently installed)
preparing to replace nvidia-kernel-2.4.25-1-multimedia-686_1.0.5336-6+2.4.25-3.4
(using .../nvidia-kernel-2.4.25-1-multimedia-686_1.0.5336-6+2.4.25-3.4_i386.deb)

unpacking replacement nvidia kernel-2.4.25-1-multimedia-686... depmod:*** unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.25-1-multimedia-686/kernel/drivers/media/radio/micropcm20.o
depmod:*** unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.25-1-multimedia-686/alsa/sndpdaudiocf.o
depmod:*** unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.25-1-multimedia-686/alsa/snd-vx-cs.o
depmod:*** unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.25-1-multimedia-686/alsa/snd-440.o
depmod:*** unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.25-1-multimedia-686/alsa/snd-vxpocket.o

dpkg: dependendcy problems prevent cofiguration of nvidia-kernel-2.4.25-1-multimedia-686:
nvidia-kernel.2.4.25-1-multimedia-686 depends on nvidia-common(>=1.0.5336);however
package nvidia-kernel-common is not installed
dpkg:error processing nvidia nvidia-kernel-2.4.25-1-multimedia-686 (--install):

dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
error were encounted while processing:
nvidia nvidia-kernel-2.4.25-1-multimedia-686

could someone please give me a clue?
thanx
t

In the case of NVidia drivers, I find I have much less hassle if I just use NVidia's own installer, rather than relying on the debian packages. The instructions are reasonably clear about what you need to do, and the installer makes sure the driver slots nicely into whatever kernel you're running (compiling where necessary).

I am running Sarge and NVIDIA's installer would not work. I found this document that worked for me (hopefully it will help you also):

Wow, the author of that document sure has a chip on his shoulder! I notice he doesn't elaborate on what's wrong with the NVidia installer, or explain what "all the garbage" that it supposedly strews everywhere actually is. I suspect he had a bad experience after not reading the instructions, and chose to blame NVidia rather than spend a few minutes figuring out where he went wrong. I am using Sarge, and the NVidia installer has worked perfectly for the last three kernels I installed (the first was the Sarge packaged kernel, the other two I compiled myself).

get the kernel headers first

Code:
apt-get install kernel-headers-$(uname -r)
download the installer from nvidia's web site. switch to single user mode,

Code:
telinit 1
run the nvidia installer, return to multi-user mode,

Code:
telinit 2

try passing

Code:
-video:vga16: o f f
to kernel at boot (this forces standard VGA mode). the space after : was to get rid of the smiley... you shouldn't use it
