Non-readable fonts in GTK apps

Hi, I have this problem:
When I run any app build on GTK 1, my fonts are VERY small, so they are barely readable...
(for example fonts in GTOASTER are small, fonts in XMMS (those fonts in preferences) etc.)
Now my question is simple: how can I change the font settings for GTK1??

Thanks a lot...

EDIT: oh, and my config: Debian Sarge latest, Xfree86 4.3.0

What locale do you use? Have you tried default locale, e.g

$ LC_ALL="" gtoaster

You could try creating an .Xresources file into your home directory and make it begin with the line:
Xft.dpi: 96
In many cases this helps.
