No Hardware Acceleration on XFree86 Using ATI Radeon X300SE

I have just finished installing Debian 3.1r0a 'Sarge' amd64. When setting up the x server, I picked the 'ati' option, but when I attempted to start X, I was given the error message (EE) No screens detected. I consulted /var/log/XFree86.0.log and couldn't find ATI Radeon X300SE on the list of supported ATI cards. I am now using the 'vesa' and X works as expected but I have no hardware acceleration. Anyone know how I can make X recognise my card and use hardware acceleration.

you could install read-edid mdetect hwinfo and xdebconfigurator to setup x for you but you will still need http://wiki.serios.net/wiki/Main_Page for ati driver guide. There may be some sarge amd64 specific tips you need. Check what kernel version, what kernel config settings, what XF86 version or xorg version is needed for your video card. You even have Fedora XF86Config-4 file for help.
Luckily there are many threads in these forums for that card.
Just go and search. Good luck.
