No GUI in Debian

Hi,

A friend of mine is using Debian Woody (i guess the version is 3.0). It boots from a floppy and boots up in text mode. When i type startx, it tries different graphical modes and gives an "Insufficient memory" error. I want to boot it in GUI mode.
The GUI only works in 8-bit color mode and not on higher values.
I tried several values of video memory but it didn't worked.
Here is some part of X-server log:

This is a pre-release version of XFree86, and is not supported in any
way. Bugs may be reported to XFree86@XFree86.Org and patches submitted
to fixes@XFree86.Org. Before reporting bugs in pre-release versions,
please check the latest version in the XFree86 CVS repository
(http://www.XFree86.Org/cvs)

how much memory do you have? what kind of video card do you have? Is it integrated or in an AGP or PCI slot? What are the rest of your specs?
