network setup problems in etch

Hi,

I installed Etch on a supermicro server. The nics onboard require the intel driver igb wich is not in the kernel tree.

To do the install, I installed a d-link gbit nic and installed the system. After that, i compiled a 2.6.24.3 kernel.

Seing that the onboard nics did not get detected by the newest kernel, i compiled the driver from the intel website and modprobed it successfully.

I pulled out the d-link nic and started the system.

The onboard intel nics gets detected properly, dmesg reports them as eth0 and eth1.

But networking does not work.

I did ifconfig -a and found out that ifconfig report that the two nics are eth1 and eth2 instead.

Where can I change this so ifconfig detects the right devices.

Thanx!

Have a look at /etc/network/interfaces. If in the current file your onboard NIC's are named eth1 and eth2 then just rename them eth0 and eth1 instead, save the file and restart your network.

Thanx for the reply but I just found the solution to my problem.

The problem is caused by udev. In file /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules, I had to erase the rule for the dlink card (two lines of text) and replace the device name for the two other intel nics and then reboot.

Voilą!

Thanx anyway for your help! It is always realy appreciated!

Jonathan
