Microsoft ttf fonts freetype

I have been able to get MS truetype fonts working in Debian, but only in one of the two installs I have made this week. In the second install when I go to "Applications - Desktop Preferences - Fonts", in the section <Details>, changing the selection in "Hinting" options does not affect the shape of the fonts. It seems like the
#define TT_CONFIG_OPTION_BYTECODE_INTERPRETER
is not working.
I have followed basiclly the instructions in http://convexhull.com/mandrake_fonts.html.
Any idea?

msttcorefonts happen to be in the contrib/ repository, which was not added to my sources.list. Problem has been solved.
