knoppix not allowing me to chroot into sarge

I messed up my MBR so i needed to reinstall grub. I was told if I could chroot into sarge via knoppix then i could install grub. But i'm getting this error

cant run command /bin/bash exec format error. I tried mounting the partiton as rw as well as ro. The partiton with the kernel image is within the partition I mounted. So I have it setup with everything in 1 partition.

if you have a knoppix loaded try this

open a terminal then its commands

su
grub
root (hdX,Y) where grub is to find the /boot folder or /boot partition in grub speak see my tut
setup (hd0) assuming mbr for first drive is where to put grub
