Kernel 2.6.x vexes me thusly

Debian's (and all other distros') version of kernel 2.6 severely borks on my system. 2.4.x works fine. I am inclined to believe that this is actually a kernel issue, that something that was done in the 2.6 tree has broken backward compatibility with my hardware. I am seriously hoping I'm wrong. Here are the specific issues.

Booting the kernel gives 3 problems:

Firstly, I get repeated dma timeout errors on all my ide devices.

Secondly, I get spammed with messages from the kernel talking about trying to get an IP from the DHCP server, but it never acquires one.

Finally, it attempts to detect my USB stuff, but fails.

Here is the entire lspci -v

Are you installing the official debian kernel-image or compiling your own?

If you're installing the official kernel (as you seem to be saying), try compiling on your own. Maybe there are conflicts with the acpi settings (for your system) in the official image. Also, maybe the wrong controller is being loaded for your motherboard (don't know if it's possible or not). Or, maybe it's the transition 2.6.x underwent from scsi emulation to native ide.

Either way, compiling on your own sounds like the only solution considering 2.6.x doesn't work from any distribution. If you haven't done it before, it'll be hit and miss.

Also, does the 2.6.8.1 kernel eventually boot, or hang? If it does and there are dhcp errors, that could have to do with the dhcp server you're connected to. The usb stuff might have to do with your /etc/fstab (unless it's your mouse/keyboard, etc).

Try knoppix (use linux26 @ boot time) to see if it boots without errors (and try various keywords like acpi=off). If it does, it's probably not backwards compatability issues, it's the official images.

Thanks for the reply.

I am using the stock kernels. Knoppix locks up on boot with either kernel. Kernel 2.6 with Debian does boot, but with no net, no usb, and the dma errors. I suspect all of these problems are rooted in the acpi issues the kernel seems to be having, rendering my entire pci bus unusable by the kernel.

I've compiled 2.4 kernels manually in Gentoo before, but I've never compiled a 2.6 kernel before manually. Actually, I've never compiled any kernel in Debian before.

I'm sure as to the procedure for compiling a working 2.6 kernel in Debian.

Well there's a great thread on howto compile under debian as a sticky in this forum here.

Good luck.

There is a known bug in the 2.6 kernel relating to usb.

What mobo are you using? I subscribe to the Debian-user mailing list and there are about a half-dozen of us there that have the same usb problems that you have. All of us are running Gigabyte motherboards, and three of us are running the GA-7IXE4.

I don't know what version of Debian you are running or how lately you have updated your distro, but I run Sarge and keep it updated quite regularly. About a week or so ago an updated hotplug version was released and now I can get my usb scanner and printer to work if I don't boot into the 2.6 kernel with them attached, but run /etc/init.d/hotplug restart after booting. If I boot with the usb devices plugged in the boot process hangs during hotplug's routine of loading the modules and configuring things according to the devices plugged in. I get a "control_timeout on ep0in" error and then the boot process hangs right there.

One other thing I've found very interesting that is related to this is that Knoppix 3.4 when booted into the 2.6 kernel recognizes usb as being present but doesn't recognize any usb devices as being present, but then goes on to say firewire is present and configures firewire devices. My motherboard was manufactured before firewire was even available so I know there is no firewire device capability even built into this board. Now the reason this is relevant in my case is because I used the Knoppix .config file when I compiled my 2.6.8 kernel.

For me the 2.6.8 kernel works the best of all the 2.6 versions I've tried. 2.6.6 and 2.6.7 were complete disasters. I couldn't even get them to compile successfully. I also downloaded and installed a 2.6.7 kernel-image from debian and tried that one. It was far worse than my own compilations are.

Here is a link to a couple of conversations between kernel developers and guys working with them on solving this problem that you might find interesting.
