Is a cool background on my TTY's like in Gentoo possible? If so how?

I was playing with Gentoo for a while. When I booted the CD there is no GUI it drops you into the command line. In the background though behind the text there is a color fade from dark to light. I have seen screen shots of other TTY's with background images behind the text (penguins and the sort). It is like having wallpaper for TTY's. I have been looking around trying to find out how to do the same thing in etch with no luck. Can anyone point me to a howto?
