internet troubles

Using debian sid I one day sometime ago started receiving temporary failures in dns resolution errors. This was because the configuration which had been working for over a year suddenly doesn't setup at boot anymore. So I manually set it.
For the time being I removed IPtables.
Now I can ping inside the network and I get replies. However anything outside the network gives 100% package loss. It's not the connection as 3 other PCs can use the internet.

Does anyone know if that's a bug in some package. What I could try otherwise to get this problem solved?

Hi,

Could you show the listing of your /etc/resolv.conf file? Also, what were the manual changes you made? And what kind of network setup is it, i.e. is there a router, are you using static IP or DHCP?

Hope to help

I use a wireless access point with MAC filtering which works and the MAC is allowed in there. I get the error message then all network settings are messed up. It's highly likely it happened in an update but it was like 4 weeks ago since I had to do some things for university in the time between but I can't find anything about a bug in some program so far. All windows PCs in the house work ok.

The computer is set completely static (even in windows since there were some problems with dhcp+winme) In windows it works too.

I saw a new error message while booting, "ignoring unknown interface static". That's probably an error in my /etc/network/interfaces. Which is now fixed but ifup doesn't seem to work doing this. So I just set it manually.

iwconfig wlan0 essid **
ifconfig wlan0 *.*.*.*
route add default gw *.*.*.*

After that I can ping to the router. But outside that, for example to google (DNS works as it finds the IP for google) but I get 100% package loss. Both for pinging to google.com and to 216.239.37.99 Starnge thing is it only happens in linux. Windows does work with those things. I only have my router as nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf but that's ok since it has been working for over a year. I have all firewall turned off (removed iptables completely)

Is there some known problem with this. I think everything is right and I wouldn't know what goes wrong.

OK. So this error no longer shows when you boot now? Just checking.

So, if dns is ok, it is most likely the routing setup. What is the output of route? And of ifconfig?

Well I'm not sure what I did. The error message said it ignored the wrong file which it apparently did not. After I corrected the syntax I had to reboot completely. Not sure how those changes in the interfaces file even happened. Don't think I changed it that much but well maybe I did, was pretty stupid then.

Thanks for the help!
