Its not very common for DVDs to be UDF since most people usae iso9660 to put data on them.

DVD movies are supposed to be udf but you dont need to mount a DVD movie at all since
dvd:// command for Xine and Mplayer streams from the disc.

VEN you did put something on the end of
mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt
didnt you??

for example
mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
or
mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/mycd
or
mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/worthlesspieceofplastic

you cant mmount directly to /mnt like you did because it will spit up an eror
if something like a harddrive is already mounted to /mnt/storage.

ultimately it is possible the DVD drive is failing and cant read some discs.
