Hi been away from linux for while
used to use slackware mostly
using debian 6.0 amd 64
I tried using the info from http://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary
but it doesnt work, dont have deb installed and apt-get install didnt work to install it
Ah yes. So this is actually not a command to put in the command line. You actually want to put that deb line the file /etc/apt/sources.list file and then it would grab the files from the internet. Can you post your sources.list file?
# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.0 _Squeeze_ - Official amd64 DVD Binary-1 20110205-18:15]/ squeeze contrib main
deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.0 _Squeeze_ - Official amd64 DVD Binary-1 20110205-18:15]/ squeeze contrib main
# Line commented out by installer because it failed to verify:

<----wow I need to wakeup
thanks for waking me some
Okay, so if you have internet access and would like to use the internet as your main repository (as opposed to the DVD), you should change your sources.list file (as root) to look like this
Code:
#Official Debian Repository
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian squeeze main contrib non-free
# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.0 _Squeeze_ - Official amd64 DVD Binary-1 20110205-18:15]/ squeeze contrib main
#deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.0 _Squeeze_ - Official amd64 DVD Binary-1 20110205-18:15]/ squeeze contrib main
# Line commented out by installer because it failed to verify:
#deb http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main contrib
# Line commented out by installer because it failed to verify:
#deb-src http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main contrib
# Line commented out by installer because it failed to verify:
#deb ://volatile.debian.org squeeze-updates main contrib
# Line commented out by installer because it failed to verify:
#deb-src ://volatile.debian.org squeeze-updates main contrib
The "#" symbol just tells apt to ignore that line, so it will ignore the DVD and only use the web repo. After saving that file, run aptitude update as root and you should have the repositories needed to follow the information at the Debian Wiki that you were trying to follow before.
Following the same steps, my system started up and the monitor went blank.
Booting in to recovery console, I observed the following;
Code:
# dpkg --configure --pending
Setting up fglrx-atieventsd (1:10-9-3) ...
insserv: warning: script 'S99rdate' missing LSB tags and overrides
insserv: warning: script 'rdate' missing LSB tags and overrides
insserv: Starting rdate depends on stop-bootlogd and therefore on system facility `$all' which can not be true!
(repeated a bit)
insserv: There is a loop between service rdate and stop-bootlogd if started
insserv: loop involving service stop-bootlogd at depth 19
insserv: loop involving service rdate at depth 1
insserv: Starting rdate depends on stop-bootlogd and therefore on system facility `$all' which can not be true!
insserv: exiting now without changing boot order!
update-rc.d: error: insserv rejected the script header
dpkg: error processing fglrx-atieventsd (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
fglrx-atieventsd
I was able to manually "/etc/init.d/fglrx-atieventsd start", aticonfig --initial, etc.
However, now for any "apt-get" command, or "dpkg --configure --pending", I get the above error.
Looks like I can get away without having fglrx-atieventsd installed.
Not the preferred solution (I've seen this error on a few other packages too), but thinks seem to be working ok now.
The fglrx-control doesn't put an "admin" version of Catalyst in the gnome menu automatically either.
